"Badblocks" - Mehmet Uluer - (2006-05-14 17:04:59)
To search for a bad block in a device use:
# badblocks -n
Here, "-n" means use non-destructive read-write mode.
Since they are mutually exclusive, never use the "-w" option on a device containing an existing file system. With this option, badblocks scan for bad blocks with writing some patterns on every block of the device (erases data), reading every block and comparing the contents. Do only if you are sure about what you are doing.
